I left school at 17 to study Equine Behaviour and Management. After completing three years at collage – where I achieved an instructor qualification – I went on to establish my own stable yard. I enjoyed running a successful livery, teaching and competition yard. Altogether I spent 15 years in the industry, which also included living and working in Oyster Bay, New York and West Palm Beach for the Dolan family who compete in show jumping at an international level.
Whilst I loved working with horses, from time to time I also worked in my father’s Management Consultancy business. Here I was able to gain experience working in computers and social media, and found that I really enjoyed working with people from all backgrounds.
Injury sadly put an abrupt end to my riding career in 2008 and then in 2009 along came my daughter. Whilst I loved being at home watching her grow, I missed the working environment. So I set out to find a job that would fit in with my home life and being a mum. I feel really fortunate that the job at Respectacle Company came along at just the right time.
My role as a part time receptionist has allowed me to meet a wide variety of people, and it’s one aspect of the role that makes my job so much fun. In addition to covering the reception, I also manage appointments and help and advise customers with their frame choices. I am also learning about the different types of lenses and assisting with customer collections to ensure their glasses are fitted correctly and that they are happy with the products and services before leaving the shop.
I really do love working at Respectacle Company. We have a great little team; Alison is brilliant to work for and Mr Hanby, the optometrist, is a little like royalty to most of his patients. In fact, some of our clients have been coming to see him for well over 25 years! That’s pretty impressive.
