Why we should be wearing sunglasses more often
Since France re-opened their borders to British tourists, there’s been a sudden surge in ski holiday bookings. Many holidaymakers have been making a mad dash for the slopes to enjoy the winter activities on offer at the country’s popular ski resorts. British tourists make up a large chunk of French ski resort visitors. But due to Covid and travel restrictions, people haven’t been able to ski or snowboard for quite some time.
If you’re packing your bags and heading to France for ski season, don’t forget to check that you have the correct documentation in place to ensure entry. From an optical perspective, we recommend making sure you pack a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes against the harsh rays of the sun whilst hitting the slopes. UV rays from the sun can damage our eyes, and prolonged exposure can lead to many eye-related health issues.
The importance of wearing protective eyewear
Because the skin around our eyes is delicate and susceptible to damage, it can lead to skin cancer. Nearly 10% of skin cancer occurs around the eye area. So just like applying suntan lotion to our bodies, we should make sure we protect our eyes, both around the eye and the eye itself, by wearing protective eyewear, such as goggles or sunglasses. LGR offers some lovely models, like the Reunion and Lawrence. Both models come with side shields and are protective and highly stylish too.
Overexposure to sunlight also increases the risk of developing a cataract. A cataract occurs when the usually clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy. This can lead to blurred vision and will require a medical procedure to remove and replace the original lens. Long term exposure to UV rays from the sun can also worsen the symptoms of glaucoma, an eye condition which, if not monitored and treated, can result in blindness.
Overexposure to the sun can also lead to macular degeneration. When the eyes macular deteriorates, it causes visual impairment and eventual blindness. Wearing UV protected eyewear can help slow the development of these eye conditions.
Sunglasses protect our eyes from the elements
Sunglasses can also protect us from the elements. For example, the glare from snow can be strong. So strong that it can burn the retina and cause snow blindness. Wind, dust, and sand can also aggravate our eyes, and some particles may even scratch the surface of the eye. Yet more reasons why it’s worth investing in a good pair of sunglasses.
If you’ve had laser surgery or other medical procedures, you should protect your eyes during the healing process by using sunglass protection. Most doctors would recommend continuing to wear your protection indefinitely.
On a lighter note, if you’ve had a few too many schnapps the night before, sunglasses can hide a multiple of sins! Wearing sunglasses will help you to squint less and develop fewer wrinkles. Sunlight can also trigger migraines. So wearing sunglasses can potentially lead to fewer headaches.
The list of benefits of wearing sunglasses goes on and on. Just remember, when investing in a pair of sunglasses, make sure you choose a good quality pair that offers UV400 protection.
